Employee Spotlight
Meet Miranda Toben, Senior Associate, who hails from the charming town of Crowborough in East Sussex. After earning her degree in Physical Geography and Geology from the University of Brighton, she embarked on a new adventure in Bedfordshire. Since joining Assure Consulting seven years ago, she now leads a team of six cost-saving experts and manages a diverse portfolio of occupier clients. Outside the office, she’s an outdoor enthusiast, juggling the care of three horses, two dogs, and a flock of ducks and chickens. When she’s not transforming her garden or tackling home improvement projects, she enjoys catching up with friends and family over a pint at the local pub. Let’s dive into her journey and passions!
Tell me about your background and how you got into service charge & lease expense consultancy? I grew up in Crowborough in East Sussex and shortly after finishing my Physical Geography and Geology degree at the University of Brighton in 2017, I moved up to Bedfordshire for my next adventure! After getting settled into a new house, I applied for a job at Assure Consulting and I’m still here 7 years later, having learnt a great deal over the years!
Describe your role at Assure? As a Senior Associate, I head up my team of six and oversee a number of clients which span across blue-chip entities within the retail, leisure, hospitality, and distribution sectors. My day to day work varies which keeps it interesting, and includes challenging costs on behalf of clients, dealing with higher value and more complex disputes, along with developing my team, as well as the wider team by delivering in-house training courses. At our annual awards night, I was honoured to receive the Jose Mourinho Award for mentoring colleagues.
And when you aren’t working, what do you like to do in your spare time? I like to keep myself busy, and with three horses, two dogs as well as some ducks and chickens, so I spend a lot of time outside! Every wall of my house has been repainted since I moved in last year (apart from parts on the stairs that I haven’t worked out how to reach yet!), and now my focus is on the garden where I’m trying to grow a variety of vegetables and keep the weeds at bay. Between this, I do make time to see friends and family too, and enjoy a trip to the pub!
What’s one thing people don’t know about you that they would be surprised to find out? Even though I keep ducks and chickens, I don’t like eating eggs! Although, duck eggs are very good for baking with!
What was your favourite subject at school? I really enjoyed Geography and then Geology at school, partly because my teacher Mr Arthur was so enthusiastic!
What’s the best piece of advice that you’ve ever been given, or that you would pass on to others? The best advice I was given was when I was much younger, and it’s stuck with me ever since! It was to do with taking an exam – If you don’t know the answer, move on, and do what you do know. I apply this to everything – always choosing to do something rather than nothing.
And one final question, list three items on your bucket list?
- Fly a plane
- Own a Land Rover
- Live on a Small Holding, somewhere rural!
